A WEEK IN REVIEW 28/04/10
I think for everybody connected with Liverpool Football Club this season its fair to say this his has been a rollercoaster of a season, probably with more dips than highs but its certainly been an eventful one.
Let me start off with last Sunday night with another massive blow with the news that Torres would miss the end of the season due to undergoing a cartilage operation of his knee, the same knee he had an operation on earlier in the year. It was very disappointing news when he was banging goals in for fun, but to be fair there had been signs in recent games that he wasn't running as freely as normal. Hopefully Torres will be fit in time for the World Cup.
On to Monday night and Liverpool faced West Ham at Anfield in the League in what ended up a comfortable win with goals from Benayoun, N'Gog and an own goal off the unfortunate Green. It was a good game for Liverpool ahead of their Europa League Semi as West Ham didn't push Liverpool much and kept Liverpool's slim chances of finishing fourth alive.
Last week was chaos worldwide with travel plans disrupted due to the volcanic ash over Europe the Icelandic Volcano, and Liverpool were affected worst than most, not knowing if there tie in Madrid was going to go ahead or not, enentually it was given the go ahead and Liverpool had to endure roughly about a full day travelling over Europe to get to Madrid arriving on the Wednesday on the eve of the game.
In the game itself on Thursday night against Athletico, Liverpool did not play well and did well to just come away with a one goal defecit, especially after losing an early goal although Benayoun was unlucky to see his effort offside. But in fairness Reina prevented us from losing by a bigger margin with a couple of outstanding saves.
In what was a hectic week for Liverpool ended on Sunday with a League game at Turf Moor against a Burnley side fighting for their Premiership survival. Liverpool with their injury problems and one eye on the Athletico game on Thursday made a few changes to their team and found the going tough early in the game, but when Liverpool scored their first through a deflected Gerrard strike Liverpool found themselves on easy street and the heart drained from Burnley, more goals followed from Gerrard, Maxi scoring his first Liverpool goal and Babel scoring a very late strike rounding off a four - nil win.
So now on to Thursday and what hopefully will be another memorable European night at Anfield. Although, its going to be very difficult with so many injury worries with the likes of Insua, Aurelio, Torres, Maxi cup-tied and now the latest problems are Kuyt, N'Gog and Agger struggling for Thursday so if Liverpool are going to do it they are going to have to do it the hard way.
